The governorship ambition of Akinwunmi Ambode received a massive boost
late on Thursday when the Lagos State caucus of All Progressives
Congress (APC), in the House of Representatives endorsed him as the next
governor of the state.
The first public endorsement of Ambode came from Oba of Lagos, Rilwan
Akiolu some weeks ago at the launch of his autobiography, “Art of
Selfless Service” in Lagos.
The caucus was led on the visit to Ambode in Abuja by the Minority
leader of the House Femi Gbajabiamila on the sideline of the National
Congress of the party.
Gbajabiamila, until the party zoned the governorship seat to Lagos East
where Ambode hails from, had also targeted same Lagos governorship
seat.
Gbajabiamila said that Ambode was the right man for the job of taking Lagos to the next level.
He described Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the national leader of APC, as the
pathfinder for the development of modern Lagos “while Mr. Babatunde Raji
Fashola the incumbent Governor was the actualiser of the dream of
modern Lagos and with the pedigree of Akinwunmi Ambode who had served in
the Civil Service of Lagos State for 27 years, he is ably qualified to
be the project manager of moving Lagos to another level.
He specifically described Mr. Ambode who has served in almost all the
Local government areas of Lagos before becoming the Auditor General of
Local Government and later the Accountant General of the State, as
having the requisite knowledge of the working of government from the
grassroots to the top and would be a bridge builder between the elite
and the rural dwellers of Lagos.
Other lawmakers who attended the meeting with Ambode include Abayomi
Ayeola, Babatunde Adewale, Hakkem Muniru, Abiodun Faleke, Aliu Kazeem
and Yakub Balogun, Rafeequat Onabamiro, Femi Gbajabiamila, Jumoke
Okoya-Thomas, Samuel Adejare, Adeola Solomon, Toyin Suarau, Jide
Akinloye, Ganiyu Olukolu and Abayomi Ogunnusi.
The lawmakers noted further in a statement released by Gbajabiamila's
media aide, Olanrewaju Smart, that they engaged Ambode “in a rigorous
cross examination where he (Ambode) also seized the opportunity to
inform the Lagos federal lawmakers about his vision for the state.”
“At the end of pre-primary election meeting, the legislators declared
their support for Ambode. The governorship hopeful also promised to
compliment the giant stride of the incumbent governor, Babatunde Fashola
he once served.”
One of the Lagos federal lawmakers at the meeting noted that the
endorsement by the National Assembly members does not exclude Ambode
from participating in a free and fair primary election of the party.
Ambode thanked the erudite lawmakers and promised not to disappoint
them and the people of Lagos if given the opportunity to serve as
governor.
